WAVELENGTH
Wavelength Services for Carrier and Hyperscale Networks in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma
Dedicated 20G to 400G optical transport on KFN’s 400G-ready DWDM backbone, with 100G available today on primary routes. Point-to-point capacity between primary markets across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, with diverse route options engineered to carrier and hyperscale specifications.
ABOUT THE SERVICE
What Is Wavelength Service?
Wavelength service is dedicated optical capacity on a fiber strand using DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) technology. Multiple wavelengths run on the same fiber, each carrying its own dedicated traffic at line-rate speeds. Customers buy a specific wavelength, anywhere from 20G to 400G, for point-to-point transport between two locations, with deterministic latency and dedicated optical capacity.
Wavelength sits at layer 1 of the network stack, below Ethernet (layer 2) and routed services (layer 3). The customer receives dedicated optical capacity between two endpoints. Traffic on the wavelength stays separate from any other traffic on the same fiber, with no contention, no shared bandwidth, and no public internet routing.
Common use cases include carrier transport between regional markets, hyperscale capacity extension between data center campuses, and large enterprise point-to-point connections between high-bandwidth sites. Predictable latency, dedicated capacity, and the ability to add wavelengths on existing infrastructure are the reasons carriers and hyperscalers use wavelength rather than alternative service types.
If you need full control over the optical layer with your own DWDM equipment, see Dark Fiber. If you need a managed layer 2 service, see Ethernet.
KFN WAVELENGTH SERVICE
How Does KFN Deliver Wavelength Services?
KFN delivers wavelength services on an owned fiber backbone covering Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. KFN’s wavelength offering spans 20G to 400G dedicated optical transport on a 400G-ready DWDM backbone, with 100G available today on primary routes, route options between primary markets, and 24/7 support from a Kansas-based engineering team. The backbone is engineered to carrier performance standards.
KFN’s Wavelength Includes
- 20G to 400G dedicated optical capacity, with 100G available today on primary routes
- 400G-ready DWDM backbone engineered to carrier performance standards
- Point-to-point routes between Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, and adjacent markets
- Connections between 19 data center facilities and carrier-neutral interconnect points
- Route diversity options for redundancy and disaster recovery
- Direct access to KFN’s Kansas-based engineering team, 24/7
- Owned fiber across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, not leased capacity
- Coverage across 250+ cities with custom build options for off-net extensions
Wavelengths are often combined with other KFN services. Customers add Dark Fiber for routes where they need full optical layer control, Custom Fiber Build for off-net extensions, and Data Center Connectivity for multi-facility colocation strategies.
COMMON CONFIGURATIONS
Three Common Wavelength Use Cases at KFN
KFN Wavelength customers typically need dedicated, high-capacity optical transport between two fixed points, without sharing capacity with other customers.
Configuration 1
Carrier Transport Between Markets
For carriers moving traffic between Kansas City, Wichita, and adjacent Midwest markets. 20G to 400G wavelength capacity on documented routes with carrier-grade SLAs, with 100G available today on primary routes. Diverse path options between primary markets support disaster recovery requirements and SLA commitments. Routed through KFN’s wholesale team rather than the standard enterprise sales process.

Hyperscale Capacity Extension
100G wavelength capacity between hyperscale-defined endpoints, including data center campuses, mobile network interconnection points, and other regional sites. Route specifications and capacity tiers confirmed during scoping. Engagements run through named engineering and executive contacts rather than standard procurement.

Large Enterprise Point-to-Point
For enterprises with specific high-bandwidth point-to-point requirements between two locations. Common scenarios include data center to disaster recovery site replication, headquarters to colocation facility connections, and multi-site backbone routes that exceed Ethernet bandwidth tiers. EPL Ethernet covers most enterprise multi-site connectivity. Wavelength fits when bandwidth requirements exceed 10G or when layer 1 transport is preferred over managed layer 2.
