ABOUT THE SERVICE
What Is Mobile Backhaul?
Mobile backhaul is dedicated fiber connecting cell sites to the mobile network operator’s core network. The connection carries voice, data, and signaling traffic from the cell site (whether a macro cell tower, small cell, or DAS node) to the MNO’s switching and aggregation infrastructure. Dedicated fiber backhaul increasingly replaces older microwave or copper alternatives, providing the capacity and latency that current and future wireless generations require.
Cell sites need backhaul to reach the rest of the network. The backhaul carries every call, text, data session, and signaling message between the cell site and the MNO’s core. As wireless generations evolve from 4G LTE to 5G and beyond, capacity and latency requirements grow. Fiber backhaul scales more effectively for high-capacity wireless generations than copper and microwave alternatives.
Common scenarios include macro cell tower backhaul connecting individual cell sites to the MNO’s MTSO (Mobile Telephone Switching Office) or aggregation point, small cell densification adding backhaul to pole-mounted equipment in dense urban markets, DAS connectivity for in-building wireless coverage, and aggregation handoff between regional cell site clusters and the MNO’s core network.

How Does KFN Deliver Mobile Backhaul?
KFN delivers Ethernet backhaul to wireless carriers across its owned fiber backbone in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. KFN connects cell towers and small cells to carrier core networks with carrier-class Ethernet backhaul, SLA-backed, with 24/7 NOC monitoring and local engineering support.
KFN Mobile Backhaul Includes:
- Ethernet backhaul, dark fiber, long-haul transport, and MTSO connectivity
- On-net and near-net cell site service with custom build options for off-net extensions
- Lit Ethernet capacity from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps
- Dark fiber options for carriers wanting capacity beyond lit tiers
- EVC routing, VLAN assignment, and handoff flexibility
- Lit-to-dark conversion options where available
- Carrier-class SLAs for availability
- Owned fiber backbone across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma
- Direct access to KFN’s Kansas-based engineering team, 24/7
Mobile backhaul is often combined with other KFN services. Carriers add Wavelength for high-capacity point-to-point aggregation between markets, Dark Fiber for full optical layer control, Custom Fiber Build for off-net cell site extensions, and Data Center Connectivity for MTSO and aggregation point handoffs.
COMMON CONFIGURATIONS
Three Common Ways KFN Customers Configure Mobile Backhaul
Mobile backhaul engagements at KFN follow three common patterns. Macro cell tower backhaul connecting individual cell sites to the MNO’s network, small cell densification adding fiber to small cell and pole-mounted equipment, and neutral-host or DAS connectivity supporting in-building wireless deployments. Each configuration uses KFN’s regional fiber backbone with different scope, capacity, and contract structure.
Configuration 1
Macro Cell Tower Backhaul
For mobile network operators connecting macro cell towers to MTSOs and aggregation points across the regional footprint. KFN delivers Ethernet backhaul, dark fiber, or long-haul transport between the cell site and MNO core, with capacity scaled to the wireless generation served. EVC routing and VLAN assignment provide handoff flexibility. Carrier-class SLAs apply. Engagements run through KFN’s wholesale team.

Small Cell Densification
For wireless carriers adding small cell capacity in urban and suburban markets to support 4G LTE expansion and 5G coverage. KFN extends fiber to small cell pole-mounted equipment, micro-sites, and street-level deployments. Capacity per small cell is scaled to the wireless generation. Often paired with Custom Fiber Build for off-net small cell extensions where fiber does not yet reach the small cell location.

Neutral-Host and DAS Connectivity
For neutral-host operators and DAS (distributed antenna system) vendors providing in-building wireless coverage to enterprise venues, healthcare facilities, sports venues, and other large indoor spaces. KFN provides backhaul to the headend and fiber distribution to DAS antennas where applicable. Engagements involve coordination between the carrier, the venue owner, and the DAS vendor.

How Does Mobile Backhaul Work?
Mobile backhaul carries traffic from a cell site through aggregation points to the MNO’s core network. The path runs from the cell site fiber drop, through KFN’s regional backbone, to the MTSO or aggregation facility. From there the MNO handles traffic on its own network. Backhaul capacity, latency, and timing are scoped to the wireless generation and use case.
The Backhaul Path
Each cell site has a fiber drop connecting it to KFN’s regional backbone. Traffic from the cell site enters the backbone, where KFN aggregates traffic across multiple cell sites onto its regional network. The aggregated traffic delivers to the MNO’s MTSO or aggregation point. From the handoff, the MNO carries traffic on its own network through its core infrastructure.
| Stage | What Happens | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Cell site fiber drop | Each cell site connects to the KFN regional backbone via a fiber drop | KFN |
| Aggregation | KFN aggregates traffic across multiple cell sites onto its regional network | KFN |
| Transport | Aggregated traffic travels across the KFN regional backbone | KFN |
| MTSO / aggregation handoff | Traffic is delivered to the MNO MTSO or aggregation point | KFN to MNO |
| Core network | The MNO carries traffic on its own network through its core infrastructure | MNO |
Capacity by Wireless Generation
Capacity requirements per cell site depend on wireless generation and traffic profile. 4G LTE backhaul typically ranges from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps per cell site. 5G backhaul ranges higher, typically 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps per cell site, with capacity expanding as 5G traffic grows. KFN delivers lit Ethernet backhaul from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps, with dark fiber options for carriers wanting capacity beyond lit tiers.
| Wireless Generation | Typical Capacity per Cell Site | KFN Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| 4G LTE | 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps | Lit Ethernet backhaul (10 Mbps to 10 Gbps) |
| 5G | 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps, expanding as 5G traffic grows | Lit Ethernet backhaul, with dark fiber beyond lit tiers |
| Beyond lit tiers | Above 10 Gbps | Dark fiber options for carriers needing capacity beyond lit Ethernet |
Performance Requirements
Mobile backhaul performance requirements include latency thresholds (varies by wireless generation and use case), timing and synchronization support for current wireless generations, including IEEE 1588v2/PTP requirements, and availability commitments (typically carrier-class SLAs). KFN’s mobile backhaul supports carrier timing and synchronization requirements for current wireless deployments. Specific latency, jitter, and SLA terms are scoped per engagement based on MNO requirements and the wireless deployment served.
