Hyperscale Capacity in the Midwest Without the National Vendor Overhead
Hyperscalers often expand into regional markets ahead of when their national suppliers can deliver. The execution gap between site selection and lit capacity is where regional fiber partners earn their place. KFN owns and operates the infrastructure across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, and builds into new Midwest markets when a site requires it. We deliver custom builds at hyperscale scope and works directly with hyperscaler engineering and construction teams to meet their schedules and specifications.
They knew what they were walking into. A greenfield site on land nobody owned yet isn't a standard order, and they'd been through the national carrier process before. What they wanted was somebody who could answer a question the day they asked it.
Direct Engineering and Construction Engagement
KFN’s engineering, construction, and project management teams work directly with hyperscaler counterparts. Build specifications, route documentation, splice plans, and milestone reviews happen between named individuals on both sides. No vendor management layer in between. The same named leads carry the engagement from scoping through delivery.
Custom Builds at Hyperscale Scope
KFN has delivered hyperscale-class builds twice over. One was a 130-mile custom build into the Kansas City metro. The other was a greenfield build to a site with no fiber in the ground and nothing nearby to extend from, delivered as two diverse 100G waves on independent physical paths. Scope, schedule, and specifications were set upfront on both and delivered to plan.
Owned Regional Infrastructure
KFN’s 400G-ready backbone and route-diverse regional network are owned, not leased. Capacity decisions, route changes, and infrastructure upgrades happen on KFN timelines, not subcontractor timelines. Hyperscalers working with KFN are working with the asset owner.

Common Hyperscale Engagements
Hyperscaler engagements with KFN follow defined engagement patterns. Each is scoped individually with route detail, capacity, schedule, and specifications confirmed up front.
Custom Build to a New Campus or Site
Hyperscaler selects a site inside KFN's regional footprint, adjacent to it, or in a new Midwest market. KFN scopes the build, documents the route, confirms permits and ROW, and delivers fiber to the campus on a defined schedule. Phase work and capacity expansion can be built into the original scope.
Capacity Expansion to Existing Sites
Hyperscaler operates an existing facility in the region and needs additional fiber capacity, diverse routes, or dark fiber strand counts. KFN extends from the regional backbone or builds incremental capacity on documented routes.
Dark Fiber for Backbone Extension
Hyperscaler manages its own optical layer and needs long-term dark fiber leases between regional points. KFN provides strand-level leases on defined routes, with diverse path options where the network supports it. Where an existing route does not reach, a custom build can extend the lease to the site.
Greenfield Build Where No Fiber Exists
Hyperscaler needs capacity at a site outside the existing fiber footprint, in the region or in a new Midwest market. KFN engineers the route while land acquisition is still in progress, works permitting and right-of-way through established local relationships, and builds to a location with no infrastructure nearby. Delivered on diverse physical paths where the use case requires independent failure domains.

Two Builds, Both Where the Network Didn't Reach
Hyperscale-class delivery is not a capability statement. It is a record. KFN has two.
The Greenfield Build
A low-earth-orbit network needs a rock-solid ground segment. This one needed fiber to a patch of rural Kansas the customer didn’t own yet. Every national carrier in the country was available to them. They chose KFN.
The site was greenfield. No fiber in the ground, no serving carrier, and nothing nearby to extend from. The land wasn’t secured either, so route design and land acquisition had to run at the same time, because neither side could commit until both were resolved. KFN ran in parallel what a national carrier would have run in sequence.
The build delivered two diverse 100G waves on fully independent physical paths with no shared segments at any point, genuinely separate failure domains rather than a labeled protect path riding the same conduit. The circuits now tie the site back to the customer’s network and give it the reach to serve hundreds of additional customers from a location that had no connectivity before it.
The 130-Mile Metro Build
A separate hyperscale engagement, a separate customer, and a different problem. This one needed 130 miles of new fiber built to hyperscale specifications into the Kansas City metro. KFN scoped the route, carried the permitting and right-of-way through its own local relationships, and delivered on the schedule agreed at the outset.
KFN’s regional backbone covers 250+ cities across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, with primary density in the Kansas City metro, Wichita, Topeka, and Lawrence. Hyperscale engagements extend the network to specific sites through custom fiber builds, including sites in Midwest markets KFN does not serve today. If your site selection lands where the map does not reach yet, that is a scoping conversation, not a no. Existing route detail and on-net data center access are reviewed during scoping.
