ETHERNET
Ethernet for Multi-Location and Carrier Networks in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma
Point-to-point and multipoint Ethernet on KFN’s owned regional backbone across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. EPL, EVPL, and E-LAN configurations with availability SLAs and bandwidth tiers from 10 Mbps to 10G, with higher capacity delivered as dedicated wavelength. One regional partner across enterprise sites in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, and carrier-to-carrier transport between primary markets.
ABOUT THE SERVICE
What Is Ethernet Transport?
Ethernet transport is a private fiber service that connects two or more sites with a dedicated layer 2 connection. Traffic stays on private transport rather than traversing the public internet. Bandwidth is symmetrical, performance is predictable, and the connection is engineered to point-to-point or multipoint specifications between defined endpoints.
Ethernet transport differs from dedicated internet access in one fundamental way. DIA gives an organization a private connection to the public internet. Ethernet transport extends private connectivity between specific sites, facilities, and partner networks. Both are dedicated services, but they solve different problems.
Common use cases include connecting offices, branches, and data centers on a private backbone, linking an enterprise location to a colocation facility or partner network, and moving traffic between carrier markets. Enterprises and carriers use Ethernet for predictable performance, scalable bandwidth, and multipoint connectivity across distributed locations.
Many organizations pair Ethernet transport with Dedicated Internet Access, using a centralized internet connection while keeping inter-site traffic on a private network. If you need full control over the optical layer, see Dark Fiber.
COMPARING OPTIONS
How Is Ethernet Different From Dark Fiber and Wavelength?
Ethernet, dark fiber, and wavelength are three private fiber options with different control levels and use cases. Ethernet is a managed Layer 2 service with provider-handled equipment. Dark fiber is unlit fiber the customer lights and manages. Wavelength is dedicated optical capacity on shared fiber. The right choice depends on bandwidth, control, and operational responsibility.
| Attribute | Ethernet | Dark Fiber | Wavelength |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Managed Layer 2 private fiber service | Unlit fiber strands the customer lights | Dedicated optical capacity on shared fiber |
| Who manages the equipment | KFN provides and manages the network equipment | Customer provides and manages all optical equipment | KFN manages the optical equipment |
| Fiber type | Shared fiber, dedicated bandwidth | Dedicated physical strands | Shared fiber, dedicated wavelength |
| Bandwidth | Defined tiers from 10 Mbps to 10G | Limited only by the customer’s optics | Dedicated high-capacity point-to-point |
| Control level | Provider-managed | Full customer control of the optical layer | Provider-managed optical layer |
| Operational responsibility | KFN handles engineering, monitoring, and SLAs | Customer owns lighting, monitoring, and maintenance | KFN handles the optical layer, customer manages endpoints |
| Best-fit use case | Multi-site enterprise and carrier connectivity | Carriers needing full control and scalability | High-bandwidth point-to-point links |
How to choose: Choose Ethernet for managed multi-site connectivity where KFN handles the equipment and SLAs. Choose Dark Fiber when you need full control of the optical layer and plan to light and manage the fiber yourself. Choose Wavelength for dedicated high-bandwidth point-to-point capacity on shared fiber. KFN delivers all three on the same regional backbone.
KFN ETHERNET SERVICE
How Does KFN Deliver Ethernet?
KFN delivers Ethernet on an owned fiber backbone covering Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. KFN’s Ethernet service supports EPL, EVPL, and E-LAN configurations with bandwidth tiers from 10 Mbps to 10G, with higher capacity delivered as dedicated wavelength to 400G, availability SLAs, and 24/7 support from a Kansas-based engineering team. KFN’s backbone is 400G-ready, with 100G wavelength services available today on primary routes.
KFN’s Ethernet Includes
- EPL (Ethernet Private Line) for point-to-point connectivity between two sites
- EVPL (Ethernet Virtual Private Line) for shared infrastructure with traffic separation between multiple endpoints
- E-LAN (Ethernet LAN) for multi-point connectivity treating multiple sites as a single network
- Bandwidth tiers from 1G to 100G with scalable capacity
- Availability SLAs covering uptime, MTTR, and performance thresholds
- Direct access to KFN’s Kansas-based engineering team, 24/7
- Owned fiber across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, not leased capacity
- Connections between 19 data center facilities, primary markets, and carrier-neutral interconnect points
Coverage across Kansas City, Wichita, Lenexa, Olathe, Topeka, Lawrence, Overland Park, and 250+ cities across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
Ethernet is often paired with other KFN services for complete connectivity solutions. Customers add Cloud Connectivity for direct paths to AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, Data Center Connectivity for colocation and interconnect, and Klear for unified visibility across all sites.
COMMON CONFIGURATIONS
Three Common Ways KFN Customers Configure Ethernet
KFN’s Ethernet service supports three primary configuration patterns: Multi-location enterprises building a private backbone across sites; carriers using Ethernet transport between markets; and single-site enterprises connecting to a specific data center or partner network. Each configuration uses the same Ethernet service with different scope, capacity, and contract structure.
Configuration 1
Multi-Location Enterprise Backbone
For enterprises operating across two or more sites in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. EVPL or E-LAN connects offices, branches, and data centers on a private network with predictable performance and centralized bandwidth management. Often combined with DIA at each site and Cloud Connectivity for direct cloud paths. Klear provides unified visibility across all locations.

Carrier and Wholesale Transport
For carriers, ISPs, and wholesale buyers moving traffic between Kansas City, Wichita, and adjacent Midwest markets. EPL and EVPL transport with documented routes, carrier-grade SLAs, and bandwidth tiers from 10 Mbps to 10G, with higher capacity delivered as dedicated wavelength. Routed through KFN’s wholesale team rather than the standard enterprise sales process.

Single-Site Enterprise Direct Connection
For enterprises with a single primary location that needs a private fiber connection to a specific destination. Common scenarios include connecting an office to a colocation facility, a branch to a parent corporation’s network, or an enterprise to a partner organization. EPL is the typical configuration.
