ABOUT THE SERVICE
What Is Data Center Connectivity?
Data center connectivity is dedicated fiber connecting an organization’s network to a data center facility. The connection delivers private bandwidth between a customer’s location and infrastructure operating inside the data center, including colocation cabinets, cloud on-ramp facilities, peering points, and other carrier interconnection services. Data center connectivity bypasses the public internet and provides predictable performance for facility-based workloads.
Common scenarios include enterprises connecting headquarters or branch offices to colocation infrastructure, multi-site organizations connecting to data center-hosted disaster recovery, carriers establishing interconnect at carrier-neutral facilities, and hyperscalers connecting their own data center campuses to other regional infrastructure.
Facility-based workloads typically have higher bandwidth requirements and stricter latency thresholds than general internet access. Public internet performance variability creates operational risk for facility-based applications. Data center connectivity replaces the public internet path with dedicated fiber to the facility, delivering predictable bandwidth and consistent performance for the workloads operating there.
If you need direct paths to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud from a data center, see Cloud Connectivity. For site-to-site connectivity into a data center-connected network, see Ethernet.

Connection Types
Cross-Connect: Direct physical fiber connection inside a data center facility. Connects KFN’s network terminus inside the data center to a customer’s cabinet, equipment, or third-party network. Standard for carrier interconnect, peering arrangements, and customer colocation handoffs.
Dual-Entry: Two physically separate fiber paths into the same data center facility, using different routes and different building entry points. Eliminates the single point of failure that would otherwise leave the data center isolated if a single fiber path is cut. Standard for production workloads where outage risk is unacceptable.
Route-Diverse: Fiber paths between two locations engineered through different physical infrastructure. Common for connecting two data centers to each other or connecting an enterprise location to two data centers. Supports disaster recovery, business continuity, and multi-site redundancy strategies.
| Connection Type | What What It Is | Redundancy | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-Connect | Direct physical fiber connection inside a data center facility, linking the KFN network terminus to a customer cabinet, equipment, or third-party network | Single path | Carrier interconnect, peering, and colocation handoffs |
| Dual-Entry | Two physically separate fiber paths into the same facility via different routes and building entry points | Eliminates the facility single point of failure | Production workloads where outage risk is unacceptable |
| Route-Diverse | Fiber paths between two locations engineered through different physical infrastructure | Path diversity between sites | Connecting two data centers, or one site to two data centers, for DR and business continuity |

COMMON CONFIGURATIONS
Three Common Data Center Connectivity Use Cases at KFN
Data center connectivity engagements at KFN typically fall into three patterns. Enterprises connecting to colocation or data center-hosted infrastructure, carriers and wholesale customers establishing interconnect at carrier-neutral facilities, and hyperscalers connecting data center campuses to other facilities and interconnect points. Each configuration uses KFN’s underlying fiber infrastructure to reach data center facilities, with different scope, bandwidth, and contract structure.
Configuration 1
Enterprise Colocation and Hosted Infrastructure
For enterprises with infrastructure operating inside data center facilities. Common scenarios include connecting headquarters to a colocation cabinet, multi-site enterprises connecting to data center-hosted disaster recovery, and hybrid cloud architectures with on-prem network plus data center compute. Often combined with Internet (DIA), Cloud Connectivity for direct cloud paths from the data center, and Ethernet for site-to-site backbone. Engagements run through KFN’s enterprise sales engineering team.

Carrier and Wholesale Interconnect
For carriers, ISPs, and wholesale customers establishing cross-connects, NNI configurations, or peering at carrier-neutral facilities. KFN provides the underlying fiber path. Connection type and configuration are scoped to the carrier’s interconnect requirements. Routed through KFN’s wholesale team rather than the standard enterprise sales process.

Hyperscale Campus Connections
For hyperscalers connecting their own data center campuses to other regional facilities, MNO handoff points, or carrier-neutral interconnect points. Engagements involve significant fiber scope and dedicated engineering and executive coordination on both sides. Often paired with Wavelength, Dark Fiber, or Custom Fiber Build for capacity expansion.
