KFN Breaks Ground on Critical Missouri River Crossing to Strengthen KC’s Digital Backbone

Construction Begins Q3 2026

Overland Park, KS, August 21, 2026. Kansas Fiber Network (KFN) is building a new high-capacity fiber crossing under the Missouri River. This new, exclusive route provides additional diversity for KFN and its customers while providing a high-security option to the existing above-grade crossings that have been plagued with outages from vandalism. The new crossing will be the third Missouri River crossing available on the KFN network, providing customizable diversity options for its customers. Construction begins in Q3 2026 and will give enterprises, data centers, and carriers a more resilient, lower-latency path across the region.

What’s New

  • A new, unique fiber path under the Missouri River exclusive to KFN
  • Built for 400G and scalable to meet enterprise and hyperscaler demand
  • Extends the reach KFN added with its 130-mile Kansas City metro expansion

Why the Missouri River Fiber Crossing Matters

For years, the Missouri River has been a single point of failure in the region’s digital infrastructure. Flooding, construction accidents, vandalism, and aging routes have all put cross-metro traffic at risk. This crossing gives east-west and north-south traffic a unique, secure, diverse path, so business keeps running when one route goes down.

“Your connectivity is only as strong as your weakest crossing. We’re removing that risk,” said Brian Cornish, VP of Network Development at Kansas Fiber Network.

Demonstrating Long-Term Commitment to Kansas City

KFN is based in the Midwest and invested in the communities it serves. This crossing is a direct investment in Kansas City’s future, not a line item on a national carrier’s map. Local teams, local support, and a network built around how the region actually moves data.
