Fiber this, fiber that. Over the last few years, conversation around fiber-optic Internet has picked up the pace. You may be asking yourself what the big deal is and why there is an overwhelming amount of hype around this new method of connecting to the Internet. Our team at KsFiberNet is here to tell you. Simply put, fiber-optics are the future of connectivity. If you’re looking to increase bandwidth potential, speed, and reliability, you may want to consider making the switch to fiber-optic communications.
What is fiber?
First things first. What exactly is fiber-optic internet? Well, unlike traditional copper wires that are prone to distortion over long distances, fiber-optic cables are more efficient at transmitting data. They are filled with glass filaments that send data back and forth using lasers and light signals, allowing for much higher bandwidth capacity. This is because fiber-optic cables use modulated light instead of electricity, so they’re not bound to the limitations of electricity conducting through metal.
How do fiber-optics work?
Let’s go one step further. Fiber-optic cables are made up of two types of small optical fibers. In fact, these fibers are less than a tenth as thick as a human hair and both have two parts: the core and cladding. The core is where the light passes through, while the cladding is wrapped around the core to create total internal reflection (TIR). TIR occurs when light experiences complete reflection at an interface between two media.
Light is transmitted down the fiber in LED or Laser pulses that travel extremely fast. These pulses carry binary data, which is a coding system that makes up everything we see on the Internet. It’s important to note that these pulses can travel up to 60 miles through fiber-optic cables before they start to experience any sort of degradation. This is further proof that fiber optic communications are a more reliable method of connectivity.
